We will soon open our first children’s home in South West London with a focus on education and enabling children in care to have access to all the same opportunities in life as any other child.
Lighthouse children’s homes will have a focus on education and enabling children in care to have access to all the same opportunities in life as any other child.
Our first children’s home will provide accommodation, care and support for up to six young people aged 12-18. There is currently a desperate lack of children’s homes in London and the South East, and opening our first home in London will enable more children in care to maintain relationships with family and friends in the local area, and will keep them from being placed at great distances from home.
We are working with architects to design the interior of a home to create a warm, family-feeling environment guided by a trauma-informed perspective. By thoughtfully designing spaces which encourage a sense of safety, opportunities for play, creativity and shared activities with others we aim to create a home where children can recover from previous adverse experiences and discover their own potential and abilities.
Our ambition in future is to develop local accommodation for care leavers, so that when children leave Lighthouse to live independently, they can continue to rely on support from the staff with whom they have relationships, in the same way most young adults do with their own families. We will be working closely with local schools to ensure that the young people who live in a Lighthouse home can get the individual support they need to learn and have fun.
